Penguin Massacre

"Fun But Too Easy"

submission: Penguin Massacre
date: December 5, 2009

This game was fun, really fun. Only problem, it was too easy, and more expensive did not mean better.

Okay, it was way too easy, I had a single brush with death, and I still didn't fall below 20 life. I never bought a health upgrade (had to repair about 3 times though), never bought a rifleman, never bought a repairmen. I also only bought 3 guns, 1 of which was completely useless to buy. That brings me right into the next topic.

The guns, are, well, fun. I started off with the handgun, bought the AK the very next round. I continued on with the AK for about 10 rounds, bought the shotgun after that. I upgraded the shotgun fully, and it was by far the most beastly weapon in the game. I went ahead and bought the chain gun about 5 rounds later, and upgraded it over the course of the next 8. I quickly discovered; the shotgun was better, far better. More damage, cheaper to buy and upgrade, faster reload, faster shooting since it was in bursts, all around better. I ended up maxing out the chain gun reload and ammo capacity, didn't get enough money to get the $30k strength upgrade though. The chain gun felt like a big waste of money though, I ended up using the shotgun to complete the last couple of rounds.

Overall though, the game was fun, not wonderful. Very abrupt ending, great weapons and enemies though.

Level Up!

"Great Game"

submission: Level Up!
date: November 26, 2009

This is an incredible game, no doubt. There was a giant bug that kind of ruined it for me though;

After getting roughly 80% completion, my completion suddenly jumped to 100%. Needless to say, I went ahead and visited the computer since I could, but still, kind of took away something.

Dragon Boy

"Okay, here we go....."

submission: Dragon Boy

I don't hate it, in fact, it is kind of addicting to a certain degree.

There are a few problems though:

What does leveling do besides increasing life?
Every time I level, it only seems like my life goes up, but enemy damage doesn't go down. My attack has gotten some mild raises, but nothing spectacular.

What is with the second set of levels?
Those skeletons and revivers don't give experience, making it that much more difficult to progress. To top it off, the revivers are TOO FREAKING FAST. I'm stuck on the level where there are 8 revivers and about 7 - 10 other enemies, and the revivers just run into a big group, then I get slaughtered by all the enemies that followed me chasing the revivers plus the revivers themselves. The only thing that even gives me exp so far is the Semi-boss, but he doesn't drop gold or loot.

What is with the gold and loot?
Gold and loot barely drop at the point I'm at, and yet, everything is more expensive then the last set when I'm getting less money. At the moment, I'm not seeing the logic in this. Plus, I'm getting at max, between 20 and 30 gold per level. Assuming I get around that each time, I'm going to need to do about 30 levels minimum just to get all the equip I need to not die.

Why is the magician the only one with skills?
Okay, so I can only choose equip for my warrior. I can only get magic for my mage. I can feed ALL of my healing items to my dragon to make him useful. Somehow, I'm seeing a minor lack of balance here. Why can't I get special skills for my warrior or dragon? Set abilities to the number keys or something for the main warrior, then make special things like attack boosting spells or something for him (temporary effects of course).

Coming back to the healing items:

Okay, I get it, the dragon needs to grow, but couldn't there be different items devoted to that? I kind of need my health items at the point where I'm at, but I feel like I'm obligated to feed them to my dragon to actually make him somewhat useful and not just a punching bag. I would like a full different set of items for the dragon growth and for the healing items to be optional items for dragon growth. I would enjoy being able to use my healing items on myself without feeling like a mistake is being made.

MAKE THE MAGE STRONGER!
The fact that the mage is a punching bag until you are level 2 is freaking stupid. Honestly, lower equipment prices, and let me buy different equip so my mage can at least be better protected or something. Plus, the mages abilities really blow for a really long time. Right when I'm like "Woot! Now that I leveled this skill 3 times, it should have a more substantial effect!", it seems to do almost the exact same thing. The mages skills are nothing but a joke for too long. The regen should really be fixed up. If I have to be dependent on it for all forms of healing in and a lot of the times out of battle, then it needs to be fixed to be more effective.

Add a town healer
After big battles, you tend to be beat up, and restore only about 1/3rd of your life when going back to town. Then you get to sit there and wait for regen to work so that you don't enter the next battle half dead. "Yawn, now that that battle is over, time to open a tab and entertain myself for 3 or 4 minutes while regen does its thing". Nuh-uh, no good. Add somebody that will heal you fully when you talk to them, it will make the game move at a slightly faster pace overall.

The good:
Very little glitches that I've encountered.
Diverse monster set.
Okay range of equip
Addicting gameplay for awhile.

Things do need to be worked on, heavily. This is basically just a poor flash version of Diablo 2 when you really look at it. Barely even Diablo 2 since I have to repeatedly click to actually attack. It is a button masher, the one button being the left mouse button.

I give it a 7 though, as like I said, I did enjoy it to a certain degree.
